In Round 5 of 5. Joe Cordiano proved to be the kingmaker of this leadership convention. Eliminated after the fourth ballot, Cordiano threw his support to Dalton McGuinty, giving him enough support to overcome the frontrunner Kennedy in the early morning hours of December 1st.

Dalton McGuinty's victory was an immense surprise, even after five ballots. He was never the frontrunner in the race but he slowly built a support base from his fourth-place finish on the first ballot. An uncontroversial moderate supported by the business community, McGuinty picked up delegates by simply seeming more reasonable and electable than the very left-wing former Food Bank president Kennedy. Kennedy had led the field from the very moment the leadership was declared open, and won every ballot but the last one. Many correctly predicted that his views on social and economic issues would hurt him in a multi-ballot race.

The McGuinty Liberals would go on to lose the next provincial election (in 1999). However, he claimed a landslide victory in 2003. Gerard Kennedy is now Ontario's Education Minister.
