Info | John Gerretsen was first elected to the Provincial Parliament as the Liberal Member for Kingston and The Islands in 1995. He was re-elected in 1999, and 2003. He has served as the Official Opposition Critic for both Tourism and Long-Term Care and as the Chair of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts. John is currently the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing and the Minister Responsible for Seniors.
John is the longest serving Mayor in Kingston history, having been elected to three consecutive terms. He chaired the Kingston Police Services Board and served on a number of provincial bodies. He was President of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario from 1986-1987 and Chair of the Ontario Housing Corporation from 1989-1992.
A graduate of Queen's University, John earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a degree in law and was called to the Bar of the Province of Ontario in 1969. He has practiced law since 1971 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1982. He became President of the Frontenac Law Association in 1992, and has served as both Small Claims Court Deputy Judge and a lecturer in law at St. Lawrence College.
John has been a tireless worker on behalf of his community as a Big Brother, a Rotarian, and a member of numerous boards including Hotel Dieu Hospital, Almost Home and the Board of Trustees of Queen's University. John has chaired many fundraising events for local charities such as eldercare homes, hospitals and the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. He has been actively involved in the construction of non-profit housing for the past 25 years and is President of a seniors housing development.
Born in the Netherlands, his family immigrated to Canada in 1954 and have made Kingston their home for the past 48 years. John and his wife Assunta have three children; Michelle, Mark and Paul.
