Info | First elected to the House of Commons in 1993 and re-elected in 1997 and in 2000, Jane Stewart has gained a national profile thanks to a strong and articulate commitment to public service. On August 3, 1999, she was appointed Minister of Human Resources Development Canada.
Appointed Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development in June 1997, Mrs. Stewart helped bring government closer to the Aboriginal peoples by allowing them to shape their own destiny through initiatives including Gathering Strength and the creation of Nunavut.
Mrs. Stewart served as Chair of the National Liberal Caucus from February 1994 until being called to Cabinet as Minister of National Revenue in 1996. As Revenue Minister, Mrs. Stewart focused on increasing fairness in tax administration, streamlining that department’s operations and making it more transparent and accountable to ordinary Canadians.
Mrs. Stewart graduated from Trent University in 1978 with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree. She built a successful career as a human resources professional, working in both small and large companies across Canada and in the U.S. prior to entering public office.
Mrs. Stewart and her two boys reside on the Nixon family farm near St. George, Ontario.
