DescriptionPrime Minister, First Lord of the Treasury and Minister for the Civil Service of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

The office of premier of the United Kingdom dates back to Sir Robert Walpole in 1721. However, the title of Prime Minister was only officially recognized in 1905 by King Edward VII. The Prime Minister serves as primus inter parus or first among equals in the British Cabinet. He or she sets the direction of the Government, appoint peers to the British Cabinet, coordinate the Cabinet's activities and departments and participate in ceremonial occasions.

As of 26 July 2019, the Prime Minister also serves as Minister for the Union. In addition, the Prime Minister invariably serves as Minister for the Civil Service.
