Description | The new leader and his deputy walked in side by side. Their procession was, an observer wrote, "like a gay wedding". But that was almost 25 years ago. The happy couple were Neil Kinnock and Roy Hattersley, Labour's new leadership team, facing the media together for the first time in 1987. The joke didn't stick: Kinnock was balding, Hattersley portly, and the idea incongruous.
David Davis's Brokeback Mountain jibe, aimed in the general direction of the Prime Minister and his deputy, may last longer. The two men are smooth, presentable and fairly handsome, and have something of the vanilla quality that marks many modern politicians. But Davis's remark was based less on physical symmetry than ideological alignment – hence its acuity. |
