Description | This inner-core riding is bounded by the North Saskatchewan River in the south, the CN Rail line running north to Manning Drive in the east, 167th Avenue in the north, and 97th Street in the west. Edmonton City Airport is in the northeast corner.
The 2001 census counted 119,083 residents. More than 24 per cent are immigrants, representing a broad cultural mix. At least seven per cent of people here are ethnically Chinese, with smaller numbers of aboriginals, Italians and East Indians.
The major employers in Edmonton East include retail trade, light manufacturing and the service sector. The average family income is $54,450 and unemployment is 7.5 per cent.
In the 1996 redistribution this riding adopted about 16 per cent of the residents of Edmonton North. Then, in 2004, it lost about one-third of its former population, while gaining 43,742 people from Edmonton North.
