Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
Tooting has been held by Labour for decades but is one of three seats covering the Conservative-controlled London borough of Wandsworth. This densely populated constituency covers parts of Balham, Earlsfield and Wandsworth Common in south-west London.
It includes the teaching hospital of St George's and Tooting Bec Lido, England's largest outdoor freshwater swimming pool. There is a large Asian population in Tooting, particularly Indian and Pakistani residents, and a large black community. Many people commute to jobs in central London using its good public transport links.
Tooting has a young population. According to the 2011 Census, it has the second highest number of 25-44 year olds in the country and relatively few over-45s. The population is highly qualified, with many in professional and technical jobs. It is also has one of the lowest numbers of jobless households in England and Wales. Sadiq Khan won for Labour in 2010 with a majority of 2,524. The Conservatives came second. |
