DescriptionCity of London
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

London is the capital city, seat of government and seat of the Royal House of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. London was built on the remains of a Roman settlement, believed to have been established in AD43. In AD60, the original Roman city was burnt to the ground by the warrior Queen Boudicca of the Iceni tribe. The Procurator, Gaius Julius Alpinus Classicianus, rebuilt London after Boudicca's rebellion and promoted London trade. London continued to grow as generations passed. The Dark Ages eventually put an end to growth of London which fell into ruin. This was the time, in the late 5th Century, that the legend of King Arthur was begun.

In the 450s, Anglo-Saxon settlers moved to England and divided it into small petty kingdoms. London fell within the Kingdom of the East Saxons. However, London's importance was often taken under direct control by Essex overlords, the Kings of Kent, Mercia or Wessex. In 597, Christianity came to London when King Aethelbert of Kent built the first St. Paul's Cathedral. Pope Gregory I sent St. Augustine to see the creation of two archdioceses in both London and York. St. Augustine settled instead to create the archdioceses in Canterbury and Kent.

In the 830s, Viking raiders invaded London. By 878 though, King Alfred the Great had become King of all the English and forced the Viking leaders to sue for peace. Alfred re-established London. In 911, London came under the direct control of the English Kings and ushered in London's prosperity.
