Situated in South-East London is the leafy seat of Beckenham - once home to children's author Enid Blyton. Residences are dominated by 1930 suburban semis and detached houses in Beckenham, Shortlands, Kelsey Park and Copers Cope. There are also low-rise blocks of flats for retired people, and younger residents who depend on trains to commute into London Bridge, London Waterloo and London Victoria.
More than three-quarters of the population are homeowners - the 38th highest proportion among constituencies in England and Wales, according to ONS 2011 Census data. Over a third has a degree level qualification or above. One in five has a professional occupation.
The Conservatives have represented the seat since 1950. Colonel Bob Stewart, the former UN commander in Bosnia, has been its MP since 2010. At that election, he was elected with 57.9% of the votes; Liberal Democrats got 20.6%, Labour 14.5% and UKIP 3.3%. |
