Description | An outer London constituency to the south-east of the city in the borough of Bromley. Beckenham is tucked into the north-west corner of London's largest borough and is the closest of the seats to inner London. Crystal Palace, Penge and Anerley on the inner edge have few Conservative voters. Further out into central Beckenham, Shortlands, Kelsey Park, Copes Cope and Eden Park, the political landscape becomes more blue. There is a high level of owner occupation (71%) and a low level of local authority renting (1.5%). The ethnic make-up is largely white (88%) but lower than the national average. Beckenham is currently held by Conservative MP, Jacqui Lait. The former MP for Hastings and Rye between 1992 and 1997, she lost that seat but won here in a by-election on 20 November 1997. Ms Lait increased her majority to 4,959 in 2001.
