Description | The Democratic Party scored a major win in the U.S. Senate elections of 2000. Many seats changed hands, leaving the Democrats with a net gain of five. The resulting Senate was evenly divided: 50D to 50R. Outgoing VP Al Gore (D-TN) broke the tie to organize the Senate on the first day, but 17 days later the new VP Dick Cheney (R-WY) voted to re-organize the Senate.
New Senators: Carper (D-DE), Nelson (D-FL), Stabenow (D-MI), Dayton (DFL-MN), Carnahan (D-MO), Nelson (D-NE), Ensign (R-NV), Corzine (D-NJ), Clinton (D,L,WF-NY), Allen (R-VA), and Cantwell (D-WA).
