Description | The Democrats won a minimal victory in the 1976 races for the U.S. Senate. Fifteen states changed hands. The Democrats won 23 races to 12 for the Republicans, which translated to a net Democratic gain of only one. The breakdown in the new Senate was 61 Democrats, 38 Republicans, and 1 Independent (Byrd-VA).
New Senators: DeConcini (AZ), Hayakawa (CA), Matsunaga (HI), Lugar (IN), Sarbanes (MD), Riegle (MI), Danforth (MO), Melcher (MT), Zorinsky (NE), Durkin (NH), Schmitt (NM), Moynihan (NY), Metzenbaum (OH), Heinz (PA), Chafee (RI), Sasser (TN), Hatch (UT), and Wallop (WY).
