DescriptionAlthough McIntosh lead the Labour Party to victory in the 1981 GLC elections, the day after the election Livingstone supporters called for a leadership vote to coincide with the beginning of the new term. McIntosh, a moderate, fell to the now larger group of socialist councillors and Livingstone became council leader the following day. Ironically, the incumbent Conservative council leader Sir Horace Cutler had predicted during the campaign that exactly this would happen if Labour were to win a majority, claiming Livingstone wished to establish a Marxist power base in London.
