Description | Indiana legislators assume office on the second Tuesday after the general election.
District breakdown:
Before 1966 - Districts consisting of whole counties or multiple whole counties, mostly with one Senator elected, but larger counties having multiple members elected at-large (top vote getters elected). A county may also have a mix of the two (e.g. Marion County from at least 1950 through 1964 elected five members at-large and one member from a joint district with Johnson County). 25 seats were up in Presidential election years, 25 seats up in Presidential midterm election years, and special elections for seats that were vacated before the midpoint of the term. Refer to [Link] for more detailed information on apportionment before 1966
1966 to 1972 - Districts consisting of whole counties or multiple whole counties of roughly equal populations, mostly with one Senator elected, but larger districts electing multiple members at-large. Some districts elected one (or more) Senator in the Presidential election year and another (or more) Senator in the Presidential midterm election year.
Since 1972 - 50 districts of roughly equal populations, whose boundaries may cross county lines, each electing one Senator. 25 seats were up in Presidential election years, 25 seats up in Presidential midterm election years, and special elections for seats that were vacated before the midpoint of the term. Vacancies may be filled by a convention of party committee members choosing someone of the same party of the vacated Senator. |
