Description BBC Profile:
Labour's Denzil Davies was MP for Llanelli from 1970 until 2005. In 1983 his share of the vote dropped to 48% as the vote was split with the SDP. At the next general election in 1987, Mr Davies' majority recovered and his support did not drop again below 50%, until 2001.

In mid-2003 Davies announced he would be standing down and Labour selected the former deputy mayor of Carmarthen, Nia Griffith, to contest the seat. At the 2005 general election she held the seat with a majority of 7,234.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

Llanelli is the largest town in Carmarthenshire, situated in the industrial south-east of the county; the constituency also includes the towns of Burry Port and Kidwelly.

Tradtionally, Llanelli's main industries were steel and tinplate giving it the nickname 'Tre'r sosban' (saucepan town) and the rugby anthem 'sosban fach'.

With the decline of Llanelli's traditional industries, the economy has diversified, and industrial estates have been built to meet the demands of new pharmaceutical, chemical, and manufacturing companies.

On the western side of the constituency Burry Port (developed for the export of coal) and Kidwelly, once the largest centre for tinplate manufacture, have become part of a growing tourism and leisure industry.
