President Kaïs Saïed initiates by decree on September 15, 2022 a re-organization of legislative elections planned for December 17, 2022, which, among other things, enforce direct party- or individual-specific voting, and constrict indirect, proportional representation. The reform extended to the election of members to the National Council of Regions, and revised a text of law governing the relationship between the two chambers of Parliament.
As a result, the role of political parties is greatly reduced in favor of candidates with no declared affiliation.
Opposition parties led by the Ennahdha party boycotted the election.
The new Parliament will be composed of 161 deputies. |
