Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
This wealthy constituency in rural Cheshire, popular with commuters, has largely been held by Conservative MPs - although anti-sleaze campaigner Martin Bell won in 1997. South-west of Manchester, Tatton is one of a few constituencies to be named after a building, the stately home Tatton Park.
It is among the most affluent constituencies in the North. Wilmslow and Alderley Edge include football stars, soap actors and singers among residents. Average income and house prices are high. Jobs have been lost at Astra Zeneca, which has moved its research and development work to Cambridge, but its Alderley Park site is set to remain a hub for life science and biotechnology.
The seat has a high percentage owner-occupiers and few council homes. Unemployment is low. The seat has among the highest proportions of top managers, directors and senior roles in the country. Chancellor George Osborne won the seat in 2010 with a comfortable majority of 14,487. The Lib Dems came second. |
