Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
Ayrshire North and Arran stretches along a strip of west coast mainland and includes, just across the Firth of Clyde, the beautiful Isle of Arran itself. Wealthy commuter areas to the north, like Largs, Fairlie and West Kilbride, exist in stark contrast with the southern industrial belt which runs from Ardrossan to Kilwinning.
The once bustling coal pits of Garnock valley, which takes in the ex-industrial towns of Dalry, Beith and Kilburnie, have since closed. A decline in the textile sector means agriculture and tourism have become some of the dominant industries, while the area has been the focus of several regeneration projects.
The seat has seen numerous boundary changes over the years and, since 2005, has been held by Labour's Katy Clark. |
