Description

BBC Constituency Profile:

Clwyd West stretches along the north Wales coast, taking in the resort towns of Colwyn Bay and Abergele. A significant number of those living in this area have moved from Merseyside and the north west of England. In contrast it also takes in a rural hinterland, which includes the historic town of Ruthin which has a large number of Welsh speakers.

The seat performs strongly on a number of economic indicators with both unemployment and inactivity levels below the Welsh average.

It has become a relatively high profile marginal seat over the years. It was initially held by Labour's Gareth Thomas after it was formed in 1997 before the Conservatives took it in 2005 and have retained it ever since. The former Conservative Welsh Secretary David Jones won in 2010 with a majority of more than 6,000.
