Description | BBC Profile:
Clwyd West was created for the 1997 general election by the Boundary Commission for Wales and is made up mainly of the former Conservative Clwyd North West seat. The first winner was Labour's Gareth Thomas who won with a 16% notional swing.
Although the Tories narrowed the gap in 2001, Thomas was returned with a higher share of the vote.
At the 2005 general election the Conservative's David Jones captured the seat with a majority of just 133.
At this election, Clwyd West has been slightly enlarged with the addition of small parts of three electoral divisions which were previously split between this seat and Clwyd South. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This constituency lies in the centre of North Wales. Its short coastline reaches from Colwyn Bay to Kinmel Bay and is home to most of the voting population of the seat. The division stretches inland to take in the town of Ruthin and parts of rural Denbighshire and Conwy.
Inland it is a largely rural constituency; agriculture is a major industry and the Welsh language is widely spoken.
Colwyn Bay is the largest town in the constituency and the second largest in North Wales. The town is now part of a the North Wales Coast Strategic Regeneration area.
The public sector is a major employer in Colwyn Bay, with organisations such as North Wales Police based in the town. Tourism is also an important part of the economy with large numbers of static caravan parks stretching along the coast. It is also an area popular for people to retire to, and the seat has the highest percentage of elderly people in Wales.
