Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
Located in south London is the socially diverse seat of Carshalton and Wallington. On the one hand the constituency consists of leafy suburbs, such as those around Carshalton Beeches, while on the other, there are housing estates at Wrythe, Beddington and the Roundshaw development on the old Croydon Airport site.
Many of the seat's skilled non-manual workers either commute in to central London or nearby Croydon. One in seven of the population has an administrative or secretarial role - the 25th highest of all constituencies in England and Wales, according to ONS 2011 Census figures. One in 10 works in construction - retail, human health and social work are also important sectors. The constituency is home to large Asian and Afro-Caribbean communities.
Tom Brake has been the seat's Liberal Democrat MP since 1997. In 2010, he held the seat with 48.3% of the votes; Conservatives got 36.8%, Labour 8.7% and UKIP 2.9%. |
