Description | Boundary changes had reduced the number of constituencies in Islington from three to two; O'Halloran was the incumbent for Islington North, while Grant was the incumbent for the abolished constituency of Islington Central. Both Grant and O'Halloran were elected as Labour MPs in 1979 but had defected to the SDP in 1981. Grant was selected as the SDP candidate for Islington North over O'Halloran who then unsuccessfully attempted to re-join the Labour Party. He sought re-election as an Independent Labour candidate in support of the Parliamentary Labour Party. |
