DescriptionBBC Profile:
This is a relatively new constituency, first contested in 1997, and was created from the former constituencies of Stretford and Davyhulme, the latter having been represented by Winston Churchill, the grandson of the wartime leader.

In 1997 a swing of nearly 10% to Labour gave their candidate Beverley Hughes the seat. There was a further 2.5% swing in 2001, but Hughes' majority was reduced at the 2005 general election. However, she still polled over 50% of the vote and with a 20% margin. Hughes is stepping down at this election

At this election, boundary changes are minimal. Bucklow-St Martins ward, which the seat previously shared with Altrincham and Sale West, is now entirely within the seat's boundaries. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

A south-west suburb of Manchester, Stretford and Urmston is industrial as well as residential in character.

The divisions in the constituency are exemplified by its being both the home of the more working-class game of football at Manchester United, and the more genteel pursuit of cricket at Lancashire county cricket club, both of which have grounds in the constituency.

Stretford and Urmston is also the location for the Trafford centre, a retail shopping centre and regional sports complex. The Trafford centre is in the Trafford business park area, which was once the world's largest manufacturing park. It is still a significant contributor to the regional and national economy. Trafford Park being in the constituency means that Stretford and Urmston is a net provider of employment to the Greater Manchester area. There is also a business park in Carrington, which consists mainly of companies in the chemical industry.
