Description | BBC Profile:
The seat has been Conservative since the 1970s, with Alan Clark representing Plymouth Sutton from 1983 to 1992 when Gary Streeter took over. Major boundary changes in 1995 transferred 60% of Sutton's electors to the new seat of South West Devon, with the remainder coming from South Hams. In 1997, Gary Streeter was elected to the new seat with a 7,397 majority and has held it since, winning in 2005 with a 10,141 majority.
Boundary changes for the election will see Buckland Monachorum and part-ward Walkham move to Torridge and West Devon. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This is a varied constituency that incorporates part of the city of Plymouth, part rural land and part coast.
There are many affluent small towns and villages in the more highly populated areas of Plympton and Plymstock on the outskirts of Plymouth, but otherwise the region has a very low average density of people.
Surprisingly for this coastal constituency, significantly lower than usual numbers work in the hotel and catering industries. There is a small, but significant farming community here, and agricultural issues remain important.
Rallings & Thrasher Notional:
C 20,831 (44.39%)
Lab 11,389 (24.27%)
LD 11,179 (23.82%)
UKIP 3,532 (7.53%) |
