Description | BBC Profile:
Chichester has elected Conservative MPs since 1924, including the famous athlete Chris Chataway (1969-74), and Anthony Nelson (1974-92). Nelson enjoyed majorities of around 20,000. His successor, Andrew Tyrie, was a professional politician and former economist.
In 1997 the Conservative majority was cut by almost half with a 7.7% swing to the Liberal Democrats.
In the 2001 general election there was a small swing back to the Conservatives, giving Tyrie a five-figure majority. Tyrie added another percentage point in 2005.
At the election, Chichester gains part of the Plaistow ward from Horsham, and loses the part-wards of Bury and Petworth to Arundel and South Downs. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The western-most constituency in West Sussex is largely rural, stretching north from the coast across the South Downs to the borders of Hampshire and Surrey.
The cathedral city and county town of Chichester was the Roman Noviomagus, and its street plan and Roman walls are still largely intact.
There are also a number of stately homes such as Goodwood, with its racecourse and motor racing circuit, and Cowdray Park, the international polo venue.
Employment is predominantly in the service sector. Rolls-Royce has built a new 60m factory and headquarters at Goodwood.
Tourism and leisure are important to the area. There are picturesque seaside and inland attractions including Petworth House and Chichester itself.
