DescriptionBBC Profile:
The constituency of West Ham has been Labour territory since the 1950s with its MPs generally getting more than half of the total vote. Labour's Lyn Brown secured a 9,801 majority at the 2005 election on a 51% share of the vote.

It has gained Custom House ward from the old Poplar and Canning Town seat and East Ham and the part wards of Canning Town North and Canning Town South from Polar and Canning Town. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated result below.

West Ham is typical of an East London constituency, but is undergoing a great amount of redevelopment due to the forthcoming Olympics and Thames Gateway projects.

West Ham is an area of significant ethnic diversity. From the mid-19th century the rapid growth of the nearby docks and riverside industries brought new residents of various ethnicities to the area.

The site of the 2012 Olympic Games will bring jobs, regeneration and investment to the area and is hoped will leave a legacy after the Games for the local community to benefit from.

Stratford City will be redeveloped over the next 15 years. It will be divided into four districts: Town Centre district, a mostly retail area, the Carpenters district, a major office district; West Leyton district, a mainly residential district and Lea Valley district, a second residential area.

Transport in the area will be greatly improved with the new international rail station at Stratford becoming a stop on the Eurostar route. The station is due to open in 2010, when Stratford regional station is connected to the new Dockland Light Railway extension. The planned Crossrail service will serve Stratford and Custom House stations in the constituency from 2017.
