Description | BBC Profile:
The old seat of Poplar and Canning Town has been Labour since its creation in 1995, and has been held by the partys Jim Fitzpatrick since the 1997 election.
At this election, boundary changes have created a new seat entirely within the borough of Tower Hamlets, and on the Conservative target list. It encompasses most of old Poplar and Canning Town, with some partial gains from Bethnal Green and Bow. The Newham wards of the old Poplar and Canning Town seat have been lost, spilt between the constituencies of East Ham and West Ham.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Poplar and Limehouse, in east London, is a constituency of enormous contrasts. In the south, it includes the skyscrapers and luxury apartments of Canary Wharf, with residents employed in finance and the media. To the north, wards like Bromley-by-Bow are more than 70% social housing with significant problems of poverty and deprivation.
Demographically, richer areas are predominantly white, while poorer ones are mostly populated by Bangladeshi Muslims, many of whom were born outside the UK.
Areas like Wapping, home to many print media companies, are popular with young professionals and are a mix of owner-occupied and private rental properties.
The constituency has been home to the famous Billingsgate fish market since 1983. Transport links are good, with the Jubilee and the Docklands Light Railway serving the area.
George Galloways Respect party was a significant force in Poplar and Canning Town at the 2005 election, polling almost 17% of the vote.
