DescriptionBBC Profile:
The seat of Leyton and Wanstead was created in 1995 and has been held by Labour MP Harry Cohen since the 1997 election. However, his share of the vote fell by 12% in 2005, with the Liberal Democrats polling in second place. Harry Cohen is standing down at the general election.

At the election, the seat gains the part-wards of Snaresbrook and Wanstead from Ilford North.

To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Within the constituency, Leyton is a working-class area with inner-city traits, while Wanstead and Snaresbrook are more suburban and middle-class.

Redevelopment in Leyton has seen some old tower blocks bulldozed, but crime and deprivation are still issues in the area.

The main sources of employment are in the public sector notably Whipps Cross Hospital and the local authorities. The development of nearby Stratford as a transport hub for local, national and international services has also created jobs.

The south-west corner of the constituency touches the Lea Valley, which is targeted for massive regeneration and development as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games plan. The Olympic park will bring jobs and investment to the constituency.

Demographically, the constituency has a large ethnic minority population and at the last census, 16% of people identified themselves as Muslim.
