DescriptionBBC Profile:
The old Lewisham West constituency has switched its party affiliation seven times since 1945. After two Conservative wins in 1983 and 1987, Labour's Jim Dowd took it in 1992 and has held onto it ever since.

This new seat of Lewisham West and Penge adds three wards from Beckenham - Crystal Palace, Penge and Cator, and Clock House to Lewisham West.

To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Limited industry means a large proportion of residents in the constituency are in public sector employment, particularly education and health.

Affordable housing is an issue. There are very few sites for new social housing, so refurbishment of old buildings is more common, but large numbers of people remain on waiting lists.

Demographically, about 35% of voters are non-white, the bulk being Afro-Caribbean.

The assorted collection of highways and by-ways which form the south circular London ring road crosses the constituency. There are currently no underground services, but the East London Line extension is due to open in 2010 and will improve access to inner London.

Lewisham was one of the first areas in the UK to introduce the governments street warden initiative to combat anti-social behaviour and improve life in deprived areas.
