Description | BBC Profile:
The Conservatives held this seat, when it was known as North Hendon and Hendon North, for almost half a century after 1950 but Labours Andrew Dismore took the newly-created constituency of Hendon in 1997. While Dismore increased his majority in 2001, it was cut to 2,699 in 2005 on a 5.9% swing to the Conservatives.
At the election Hendon loses three part-wards - Finchley Church End, Garden Suburb and Golders Green - to Finchley and Golders Green and one part-ward Underhill - to Chipping Barnet. It gains one part-ward - Mill Hill - from Finchley and Golders Green. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This urban north-west London constituency is one of contrasts. Expensive houses in Edgware and the rural environs of Mill Hill stand in stark contrast to the pockets of council estates of Colindale and West Hendon.
The constituency has a sizeable ethnic community, including one of Barnets largest Jewish communities and large Asian and black communities.
Hendon is home to Middlesex University, the RAF Museum, the British Library National Newspaper collection, the Hendon Police Training College, and the National Public Health Laboratory Service which provide significant employment, along with the banking and financial services and retail sectors.
Brent Cross shopping centre the UKs first is now the centrepiece of a 4.5m regeneration scheme for the areas of Cricklewood, Brent Cross and West Hendon, the plans for which were submitted to Barnet Council in 2008.
Edgware General Hospital closed in 1996 but the newly constructed 40m Edgware Community Hospital is now a flagship NHS facility.
