Description | BBC Profile:
For decades this was one of the safer Tory constituencies in London but, in 1997, Labours Gareth Thomas won the seat with a 2.4% majority. Thomass majority increased in 2001 to more than 6,000 votes but subsequently fell to 2,028 in 2005.
At the election, Harrow West gains one part-ward of Harrow on the Hill and the wards of Greenhill and Marlborough from Harrow East, gaining 14,000 voters. In Harrow West the wards of Hatch End, Pinner, and Pinner South are transferred to the new constituency of Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Harrow is a culturally, ethnically and economically diverse place, with around a third of its population being Asian. At just over 75%, Harrow West has one of the highest concentrations of owner-occupiers in the country.
Harrow residents have access to some of the best primary and secondary schools in the country. Edgware Hospital was closed in 2002.
