Description | BBC Profile:
The seat of Croydon North has been held by Labour MP Malcolm Wicks since its creation in 1997. In 2005, he won with 53.7% of the vote.
Before 1992 the Conservatives typically held the advantage throughout the borough of Croydon.
At the election, minor boundary changes have resulted in the wards of Broad Green and South Norwood coming fully into the constituency.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This is the most urban of the three constituencies within the Borough of Croydon, a centre of employment, transport links and retail between inner London and the affluent commuter belt to the south of London.
Selhurst Park, home to Crystal Palace Football Club, is the prominent landmark of this seat, but the areas burgeoning local economy is built on retail and businesses exploiting its good transport links with Gatwick airport and central London.
High-profile companies in the borough include Nestl, British Telecom and Vodafone alongside various financial and insurance companies.
At the 2001 census, about half the population was white, with black and Asian residents each accounting for about a fifth.
