| Description | The Republican Party was rejeuvenated by the U.S. Senate elections of 1978. Although the Democrats won a nationwide popular vote victory of 51-47%, the Republicans scored a net gain of three seats, winning 20 races to 15 for the Democrats. As in 1976, several seats changed hands: 13 in 1978.
New U.S. Senators: Stewart (AL), Pryor (AR), Armstrong (CO), Jepsen (IA), Kassebaum (KS), Cohen (ME), Tsongas (MA), Levin (MI), Durenberger (MN), Boschwitz (MN), Cochran (MS), Baucus (MT), Exon (NE), Humphrey (NH), Bradley (NJ), Boren (OK), Pressler (SD), Warner (VA), and Simpson (WY).
