| Description | The U.S. Senate elections of 1972 were a draw between the two major parties. The Republicans went into the election with a majority of the contested seats and ended up winning an 18 seats to 16 for the Democrats or a 54-45% popular vote win. Altogether, the Democrats managed to score a net gain of two seats; the new Senate had 56 Democrats, 42 Republicans, and 2 Independents.
New Senators: Haskell (D-CO), Biden (D-DE), Nunn (D-GA), McClure (R-ID), Clark (D-IA), Huddleston (D-KY), Johnston (D-LA), Hathaway (D-ME), Domenici (R-NM), Helms (R-NC), Bartlett (R-OK), Abourezk (D-SD), Stafford (R-VT), and Scott (R-VA).
