| Description | The Democrats managed to hold onto most of their Class of 1964 in the U.S. Senate elections of 1970. They went into the election holding two-thirds of the seats; they ended up winning 22 races to 11 for the Republicans and 2 Independents. As a result, the Democrats lost four seats and the Republicans gained two seats. The new Senate stood D-54, R-44, I-2.
New Senators in 1971: Stevens (R-AK), Tunney (D-CA), Weicker (R-CT), Roth (R-DE), Chiles (D-FL), Stevenson (D-IL), Beall (R-MD), Humphrey (DFL-MN), Buckley (C-NY), Taft (R-OH), Brock (R-TN), and Bentsen (D-TX).
