| Description | The Democratic Party won a narrow 50.8-48.3% victory in the U.S. Senate races of 1956. Overall, that meant a Democratic gain of four seats (plus one when the Independent Sen. Morse of Oregon officially switched to the Democrats). The Republican Party gained four seats from the Democrats. Among the new Senators were Church (D-ID), Javits (R-NY), and Lausche (D-OH). The makeup of the Senate changed from D-48, R-47, I-1 to D-49, R-47.
