| Description | Sen. Engle had an operation for a brain tumor early in 1964. He carried out his duties as well as he could, being a semi-invalid. Alan Cranston was his first announced rival. Gov. Brown convinced the AG to keep out of the race, as he supported Cranston. Pierre Salinger, Pres. Johnson's press secretary, announced his intention to run and had to get a ruling from the Secy of State whether he could run (as he was then a resident of Virginia). Salinger's campaign theme was "Let the man who spoke for Presidents speak for you." His health continuing to deteriorate, Engel dropped out of the race on 4/28/1964. Gov. Brown supported Cranston, and Engle himself came out for Cranston in order to limit the number of votes for him (as his name remained on the ballot).
When Engle died, Gov. Brown appointed Salinger to the seat. Murphy, the Republican candidate, protested since Salinger was not eligible to vote but could serve as Senator. He used this accusation to win the general election. |
