| Description | Leitch, a personal friend of Sen. Bloom, was selected among ten candidates. The district consisted of three counties, and each GOP county chairperson cast weighted votes. Leitch was the choice of only the Peoria County chairman, but since Peoria was the largest county, the chairman held the majority of the weighted vote. St. Rep. Carl Hawkinson, also a candidate for selection, vowed to run in the primary as a write-in candidate against Leitch, also a write-in candidate for the nomination.
