Description | Coalition of 39 center-right parties organized and led by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Alliance was co-founded by the 10th Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee (March 19, 1998 to May 22, 2004) and 7th Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani (June 29, 2022 to May 22, 2004). Coalition's prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 general election was the 14th Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, who succeeded that year in becoming India's 14th Prime Minister, taking office on May 26, 2014. Alliance commands after general elections held between April 11 and May 19, 2019 an unprecedented 342 out of 543 seats in the Lok Sabha and 120 of 245 seats in the Rajya Sabha. Alliance also controls 18 out of 31 States and Union Territories as of May 17, 2020. Alliance has been led since July 9, 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah [Rāṣhṭrīya Loktāntrik Gaṭhabandhan]. |
