| Description | The Action démocratique du Québec (ADQ) is a provincial, and fiscally right-of-center political party in Quebec, Canada. Its official registered name is Action démocratique du Québec/Équipe Mario Dumont. While some journalists have translated the name into English as Democratic Action of Quebec, it has no official English name, and is normally referred to by its French name in the English-language media.
The ADQ is the most conservative of the three major provincial parties in Quebec. Its members are referred to as adéquistes, a name derived from the French pronunciation of the initials 'ADQ'.
Perceived as the one-man party of its young leader Mario Dumont, the ADQ has never had more than five Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) at once and has been under pressure from the media to merge with either of the two major parties, the Liberal Party of Québec and the Parti Québécois. The ADQ has also never gained official party status in the provincial parliament, as the rules require at least 12 members to be granted such a right.
It has had limited electoral success in predominantly French-speaking rural and small-town Quebec, achieving its best score in Chaudière-Appalaches, the most conservative region of Quebec. Chaudière-Appalaches has elected politicians from conservative parties such as Union Nationale and Ralliement des Créditistes, at times when the majority of Quebec voters rather supported more centrist or left-wing members.
The ADQ has difficulty breaking through in the most districts of the Montreal area, especially in the predominantly English-speaking ones. |
