Description | The oldest party in Germany and prominent in the late 19th/early 20th century formation of a modern Germany, from 1871 to the end of the Weimar Republic. Party identified itself with political Catholicism and immediately upon its launching went to battle against Chancellor Otto von Bismarck's effort to subject the Roman Catholic church to state controls (the 'Kulturkampf'). Party was also a major support for the Reich Chancellors during the Weimar period until the party was banned by Hitler in 1933. Party's revival in 1945 did little to avail itself of representation in the new nation's legislative bodies until January 2022, when it picked up one seat in the 736-seat Reichstag. Party strives to return to its ci-devant glory and has begun to seek representative success in state parliaments, starting with the North Rhine-Westphalia Landtag election in May 2022. Party chairman is Christian Otte [Deutsche Zentrumspartei or Zentrum (DZP or Z)]. |
