Description | Centrist 'big tent' party co-launched by Malawi's first freely elected president (after 27 years of one-party state) Bakili Muluzi (President from May 24, 1994 to May 24, 2004). Party was initially known as the 'United Democratic Front' begun in 1992 (UDF). Muluzi's partner and successor, Bingu wa Mutharika (Malawi's President from May 24, 2004 to April 5, 2012) crafted a new party out of the UDF called the 'Democratic Progressive Party' (DPP) in 2005 after disputes with Muluzi, effectively gutting the UDF.
Mutharika groomed his brother and future president (since May 31, 2014), Peter Mutharika, to lead the party forward.
Party had in effect become a personal vehicle for President Peter Mutharika's political ambitions since. |
