Description | DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Even before U.S. Rep. Jim Nussle launches a seven-day blitz announcing his intentions to join the Republican gubernatorial race, he's come under fire from top Democrats critical of his role in Congress.
Former Iowa Democratic Chairman Gordon Fischer, a Des Moines lawyer, said he's forming a new group called Iowans for a Cleaner Congress to bash Nussle for his ties to controversial House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.
"Mr. Nussle wants to go from representing one part of Iowa to representing all of Iowa," said Fischer, in a conference call Tuesday with reporters. "We want Jim Nussle and all of our congressional delegation to bring Iowa values to the Congress, not bring congressional values back to Iowa."
A Nussle spokeswoman dismissed the attack, saying it's yet another effort to link Nussle to DeLay, and shows that Democrats have a paucity of ideas.
Nussle launches a weeklong blitz through 50 Iowa cities to make the expected announcement that he will join the race. The tour is scheduled to begin Wednesday in his hometown of Manchester.
