"I stand here undaunted in my vision of an Iowa all of us are proud to call home and others will come home to. And I stand here unafraid to set out to make this vision a reality by offering bold solutions and getting results,” Congressman Jim Nussle, 6/1/05
Born in Des Moines, Jim Nussle was educated at Luther College in Decorah and Drake Law School in Des Moines. After graduating, Nussle chose Manchester, Iowa to pursue a career in law and make his home. He continues to live in Manchester today with his wife Karen, a communications professor at the University of Dubuque. Jim also has two children, Sarah and Mark.
Congressman Jim Nussle began his years of public service as a County Attorney working to ensure the safety of families in Delaware County. After a hard fought race in one of the toughest congressional districts in the Congress, Nussle entered Congress as the youngest member in 1991.
Today, he continues to represent the First District, fighting to increase federal funding for Iowa classrooms; to open markets for Iowa farm commodities that promote job and business growth and to work to make Iowa an energy state by promoting ethanol and wind as part of the nation’s energy and environmental policy. He consistently works toward bipartisan solutions to the challenges facing his congressional district, Iowa and the nation.
Over the last three Congresses, he has been chosen by his peers to serve as Chairman of the House Budget Committee. As Chairman of the House Budget Committee, Nussle displays the leadership and discipline to achieve responsible budgets, hold down taxes for Iowans and cut deficits. Under Chairman Nussle’s guidance the 2005 budget reduces non-security discretionary spending for the first time since Ronald Reagan’s presidency.
He also serves as a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which works with tax, trade, Medicare and Social Security matters.
Congressman Nussle’s dedication to community service extends beyond public life. He is an enthusiastic volunteer and participates in community activities in his hometown of Manchester. He has served on the Delaware County Economic Development Committee as President of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the Delaware County Farm Bureau and was a volunteer firefighter with the Manchester Fire Department until his election to Congress sixteen years ago. Prior to serving in Congress, Nussle served as Delaware County Attorney for four years.
Congressman Nussle was the Republican nominee for Governor of Iowa in 2006 and lost to Democrat Chet Culver.
President Bush appointed him as the director of the OMB and was approved by the Senate in 2007.
