DescriptionCornwall South East was created in 1983, substantially from the old seat of Bodmin. Bodmin itself had a long tradition as a Conservative-Liberal marginal. It was held by Isaac Foot, Liberal MP and father of Michael Foot from 1929 to 1935. After the war it was regained by the Liberal Peter Bessell and retained through a number of close contests until 1970. Robert Hicks lost to Paul Tyler in February 1974 but regained it a few months later in October 1974. The constituency inspired many of the novels of Daphne Du Maurier who lived at Par near Fowey. It includes a large part of the south Cornish coast, running from Fowey in the west, through the old fishing village of Polperro - now a major tourist attraction - to the fishing port and resort of Looe and, in the Tamar estuary, the more industrial towns of Torpoint and Saltash. At the centre of the constituency is the main administrative centre of Liskeard, where Caradon District council has its headquarters. Here there is also some light industrial development, as there is at Callington further to the east - but the main industries are tourism, agriculture and fishing. There are some defence-related jobs in Torpoint which are part of Plymouth's defence industry. Up to a third of the working population travels to Plymouth for their employment. With the decline of indigenous industries, the whole area is very reliant on the health of that city. However, the local economy has received something of a boost in recent years with the huge success of the Eden Project which is situated within the seat. In 1997 the constituency fell, on a massive 12% swing, to the Lib Dems' Colin Breed who retained the seat on an almost unchanged result in 2001.
