Description | Hayes and Harlington includes almost all of Heathrow Airport, and many of the big issues in the constituency revolve around what goes on with its major employer, particularly the construction of a fifth terminal which would bring extra pollution but also extra jobs. Most of those who work here do so in an ancillary and airside capacity. The seat's working class origins result from its creation as an industrial area at the beginning of the 20th Century. It has taken advantage of successive booms, most obviously in air travel since 1945. The area is also a centre for logistics and new technology because of its obvious excellent transport links. That has brought economic and social benefits and waves of Scottish, Irish, Asian and Somali immigration to fill the job vacancies. In the 1980s the ethnic minority population virtually doubled and this is now a multi-cultural area. This was one of a number of constituencies where the sitting MP joined the SDP in 1981. Neville Sandelson had represented Hayes and Harlington for Labour since 1971 but, after his defection, lost in 1983. The Conservative's Terry Dicks held the seat until 1997. In 1992 Mr Dicks' majority was the lowest in the country - 53 - over his Labour opponent, former GLC member and left-winger John McDonnell. Mr McDonnell was elected in 1997 by a rather larger majority - 14,291, which dropped slightly to 13,466 in 2001 on a much lower turn-out.
