Description | This seat was created from the former constituencies of Dulwich and Norwood in 1997 and straddles parts of the boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark. The South Circular road crosses the constituency from east to west. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has managed to score in excess of 30% majorities in each of the last two general elections. It is a diverse area with pockets of affluence around Dulwich Village - residents have included Eddie George, former governor of the Bank of England, and Margaret Thatcher, former prime minister. Top independent school Dulwich College is here. However, there are also parts of the constituency which are not so privileged. Of the 50% housing that is not owner-occupied, 21.6% is council rented. Nearly 70% of the population is white, though there is a significant (20%) black community. The population boasts a high proportion of highly educated people working in managerial and professional jobs.
