DescriptionThis new constituency consists of the old Livingston seat plus two wards from the old Linlithgow seat. The constituency is dominated by the new town of Livingston with outlying settlements such as Broxburn, Fauldhouse, Uphall and East and West Calder, all areas where coal mining was once the dominant economic activity. Livingston is at the heart of what became known as 'Silicon Glen'. The area thrived on the back of the electronics industry, particularly during the boom years of the 1980s. More recently, however, times have been a good deal harder; in 2001 NEC announced the closure of its factory with the loss of around 1,200 jobs. But new developments have been attracted to the area. For example BSkyB and Halifax have sited operations in Livingston, and several large retail developments have helped to keep the local economy ticking over. A famous Livingston son was James 'Paraffin' Young, founder of the shale oil industry. While, as part of the boundary review for this constituency, a small part of the Edinburgh West seat was absorbed into Livingston, taking in one extra voter.
