Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
Livingston stretches from the western outskirts of Edinburgh to the Pentland Hills in the south, up to a small area of ex-mining towns just north of the M8. The new town of Livingston itself is the largest in West Lothian, its growth aided by the hi-tech electronics and communications sector.
It has become a municipal centre for the area, while the old Lothians industrial heartland has benefited significantly from the burgeoning economy of Edinburgh. Former Labour foreign secretary Robin Cook became Livingston's first MP in 1983, following boundary changes in his old Edinburgh Central constituency.
Mr Cook, who died in 2005 at the age of 59 while hillwalking, was succeeded by his former election agent Jim Devine. Mr Devine was later jailed for fraudulently claiming £8,385 in parliamentary expenses and was replaced by Graeme Morrice, who held Livingston for Labour in 2010 by 10,791 votes. |
