Description | Sitting Labour MP, Stephen Timms - currently financial secretary to the Treasury - first won this seat (then Newham North East) in a 1994 by-election following the death of the previous Labour MP, Ron Leighton. The by-election was interesting: Mr Timms won with a 60% majority, aided by the defection to Labour just days before polling of the Liberal Democrat candidate, Alec Kellaway, who urged his supporters to follow suit. In the 1997 General Election, Mr Timms won again, despite the presence of a Socialist Labour Party candidate who polled nearly 2,700 votes and came third ahead of the Liberal Democrats. East Ham was one of three constituencies in which Socialist Labour managed over 5% of the vote and thus saved their deposit. In 2001, however, Socialist Labour fell back badly - to 700 votes - and Labour scored an impressive swing. Mr Timms' majority is now 56.4%. East Ham straddles the District Line to the East of London and is effectively the old Newham North East seat with the addition of one ward from Newham South. According to the 2001 census, East Ham has the fourth largest black, and sixth largest Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi, community in the country. The white population is the lowest of any constituency - just one-third of the total. It also has the third highest number of people in the 0-15 age range. Newham will see huge benefits if the Olympic Games come to London in 2012.
